Jesus's accusers' witnesses
Jewish misunderstanding
But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
-- John 5:17-18 (ESV)
Out of context it seems like Jesus "equal himself with God", but this was a false accusation from the Jews. Jesus' corrected this misunderstanding:
"Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise." -- John 5:19 (ESV)
In other words, he says that he cannot be equal to the Father, because he is lead by the Father.
Jewish mob
Another example also found in the Book of John, a few chapters later:
The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.” -- John 10:33 (ESV)
Note that this was a human accusation, not one of Jesus' claims.
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from hy Father. For which of those works do you stone me?”
The Jews answered him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself God.”
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, I said, “You are gods” ’? If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?-- John 10:31-36 (NKJV)
Jesus quoted Psalm 82 to point out to his accusations that there was a Psalmist who called human kings "gods" which were not considered "blasphemy". Therefore, Jesus challenge his accusers definition of "blasphemy" and imply that as someone "whom the Father sanctified and sent" he also has the authority to be called a "god" as in the sense of the other kings of the Psalm he quoted, although did not even do that, instead he only called himself "the Son of God"
The Psalm that Jesus quoted was:
I said, “You are gods, and all of you are children of the most high. But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.”
-- Psalm 82:1,6-7 (NKJV)
Although there are different interpretations of this Psalm, it is clear that these "gods" are human kings ("children of the most high" possibly meaning "royal families") because they will die (something that is not possible for God or angelic beings) and their rule would eventually "fall".
Trails
When Jesus was trailed, no one accused him of claiming to be "God in flesh", instead the Jews trailed him for claiming to be the Christ.
The high priest said to him (Jesus), “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment?”
They answered, “He deserves death.”-- Matthew 26:63-66 (ESV)
This was also recorded by Mark 14:61 (ESV):
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”
And Jesus said, "I am"
and Luke 22:67-71 (ESV):
When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said,
“If you are the Christ, tell us.”
But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated zat the right hand of the power of God.”
So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?”
And he said to them, “You say that I am.”
Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”
Even the high priest could not find any proof that Jesus claimed to be God. The best evidence that they could come up was the Jesus claimed to be:
- the Christ
- the Son of God (which means he is not God because it would be a paradox if he claimed to be his own son)
However, some argue that the term "Son of God" means that Jesus is God's reincarnated body.
