Nicodemus

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,

“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”

-- John 3:1-2 (ESV)

Explanation:

The Greek is the preposition apo (G575) which in this context simply means “from.” Jesus Christ was a teacher from God. God sent him, just like He sent angels or the prophets; and God inspired his teachings. Some people have tried to support the Trinity or the preexistence of Christ by this verse, but it does not have to mean that at all. -- REV commentary - Spirit & Truth Fellowship International

Nicodemus is correct when he says "no one can do these signs that you do", however that last part of his words are often ignored: "...unless God is with him". By this statement Nicodemus acknowledged that:

Furthermore,

  • Nicodemus called Jesus "Rabbi", instead of "my God".
  • Nicodemus stated that the general belief among the Pharisees was that Jesus was "a teacher" instead of a god.
  • If Nicodemus believed Jesus was God, he would have unquestionably believed Jesus teaching (John 3:12) and treated him like a god.
