The Son as God
If you believe "God" has the following attributes:
- He is eternal (Revelation 1:17-18)
- He has power over death (John 5:21, Revelation 1:17-18)
- He has power to heal (John 4:46-54, 5:8-9)
- He has the authority to judge or forgive sin (Matthew 10:32-33, John 5:22, 1 John 2:1, Mark 2:10)
- He is the foundation ("the rock") (1 Corinthians 10:4)
- He will return to judge the world (Matthew 16:27-28; Revelation 22:1-5)
- He is the trustworthy witness ("truth" or "light") (John 1:5, 3:19)
- He rules over our world (Matthew 28:18; Psalm 2:8-12; Isaiah 42:1-4; Hebrews 2:7-8; Philippians 2:10-11)
- He looks after his people (John 10:14)
However, God the Father also has similar attributes as per the above definition of God:
- The Father also eternal. (Isaiah 44:6, 48:12, Revelation 21:5-8, 22:13, Exodus 3:14–15; Isaiah 48:12)
- The Father also has power over death (Acts 2:24)
- The Father also has power to heal (Exodus 15:26)
- The Father also has the authority to judge or forgive sin (Genesis 18:25, Exodus 34:7; Numbers 14:17, Matthew 6:14-15)
- The Father is also called "the rock" (Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 18:2, 19:14; Isaiah 48:17; 1 Samuel 2:2; 2 Samuel 22:47)
- The Father will also return to judge the world (Matthew 16:27-28; Revelation 14:1; 19:11-16; 22:1-5)
- The Father is the source of truth or "light" (Psalm 27:1, 1 John 1:5-7)
- The Father also rules over our world (Job 11:7)
- The Father also look after His people (Matthew 6:26, Matthew 7:11, Matthew 10:29, James 1:17, Psalm 23:1, Ezekiel 34:2)
However, the Shema in the Bible teaches that there is only one God.
Christians solves this contradiction with Trinity Doctrine which view the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as one substance or God-being usually referred as the "Godhead". Therefore, Christian worship and serve only one God, yet belief in a distinct Father, Son and Holy Spirit. To further support this view the following evidences are usually used to proof that Jesus is God:
- Similarities between Jesus and God
- Prophecies
- Jesus' own claims
- Jesus is the Word
- Witnesses of people who met Jesus in person
- Jesus was worshipped
- Jesus was served
- Jesus is our lord
- People pray to Jesus
- Jesus is holy
- Jesus is glorified
- Jesus' sacrifice was worthy
- Jesus is our saviour
- Jesus forgave sin against God
- Jesus did miracles
- Jesus was resurrected
- Jesus transform our bodied
- Jesus is the bridegroom, we are his bride
- Jesus is eternal
Unfortunately the word "God" has many different meanings. For example a Christian, Jew, Muslim and Hindu could all worship their "god", but each intends to worship another "god". Therefore, if the above description fits your understanding of "God", then you could easily explain why Jesus is your "God" especially if you take into consideration that human kings and heroes were often also referred as "gods" by biblical standards.
In addition, to proof that Jesus is God, some also belief:
But the Bible also clearly distinct YHVH (the LORD), the Almighty God and Father from Jesus and other gods. Only the following attributes could be assigned to God the Father which disqualifies Jesus as the one and only Almighty God:
- There can only be one God (Deuteronomy 6:4; 2 Samuel 7:22; Mark 12:29; Ephesians 4:6)
- God would refer to Himself as God (Luke 4:17-20; Isaiah 61:1-2)
- God does not reincarnate (Numbers 23:19; 1 Kings 8:27; Psalm 90:2)
- God does not have parents (Matthew 16:16)
- God requires worship (1 Samuel 7:3-4; Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8)
- God has the highest authority (John 7:16, John 14:24; Genesis 14:22; Psalm 7:17; Psalm 47:2)
- God does not have limitations (Job 11:7; Luke 2:52)
- God is immortal (Romans 1:22-23; Timothy 1:17)
- God is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-10; Ephesians 4:6; Revelation 19:6)
- God cannot be seen (Exodus 33:20)
