Jesus has a Parent

Jesus is the son of the Father

Jesus was never introduced as God Himself, a mode of God, a part of God, a member of God, God's reincarnation, God's puppet or avatar. Instead, God Himself announced that Jesus is His Son:

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said,

“This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”***

-- Matthew 3:16-17 (ESV); Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21; John 1:51

And at Jesus transfiguration God also announced:

And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” -- Mark 9:7 (ESV)

Peter also testifies:

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. -- 2 Peter 1:16-18

Trinitarians explain that these scriptures means that Jesus as God was telling the world that he loves himself. However, there are a few problems with this reasoning:

  • The people heard another voice from heaven saying this, while Jesus was standing in their presence.
    • If the voice was coming from a different God while Jesus was in their presence, it logically means Jesus is not that God and that God is not Jesus.
    • God is not suffering from NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), therefore it does not make sense that God had to publicly announce that He loves Himself.
  • The voice could have said to the disciples: "This is a member of the Godhead, listen to him", or "This is your new God, listen to him", or "This is My human body / avatar / image, listen to it", but instead God said "This is My beloved son" which implies that Jesus is not God Himself, because nature demonstrated that no father can be his own son.

Jesus also referred to himself as the "Son of God" in John 9:35, 10:36, 19:17 and prayed:

And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard me. I knew that You always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that You sent me.” -- John 11:41-42 (ESV)

If Jesus prayed to himself as a "Father" Who "always hear" him (an action that happens between two distinct parties), and Jesus prayed "on account of the people standing around that they may believe", then he would have totally confused everyone if he really was God the Father especially if he indicates that this "Father" had "sent" him (another distinct action).

Another example:

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. -- John 17:1-5 (ESV)

Peter also testified that God is Jesus' Father:

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,

“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

-- Matthew 16:13-17 (ESV)

Peter could have said: "You are God", but he said "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus did not correct Peter, but instead praised him because "his Father" revealed this information such that Peter continued teaching his disciples this way:

The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified His son Jesus -- Acts 3:13 (KJV)

For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. -- Acts 4:27-30 (KJV)

(Some translations translate "child" as "servant".)

Paul testify that God is Jesus' Father:

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which dhe promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ -- Romans 1:1-6 (NKJV)

and

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. -- Galatians 4:4-5 (NKJV)

and

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places... -- Ephesians 1:3 (ESV)

and

Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers:

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened.

-- Ephesians 1:15-18 (NKJV)

Jesus is an heir of God

If Jesus was God Himself, why would he need to inherit anything (Psalm 2:7-11) if God owns everything?

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. -- Romans 8:17 (ESV)
