Peter's Witness

Hope in God

He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, Who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. -- 1 Peter 1:20-21 (ESV)

Jesus was "manifested", was "raised from the dead", so some use this as evidence that the last reference to "God" is also to Jesus. The original Greek had no English punctuations. If you remove the punctuations the verse becomes clear:

Phrase Reference
"He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times..." Jesus
"...for the sake of you who through him are believers..." Jesus
"...in God Who raised him from the dead" (Acts 2:24,32) God the Father raised Jesus from the dead
"...God Who... gave him glory" God the Father gave Jesus glory
"...so that your faith and hope are in God." God the Father

Our "faith and hope" is in "God who raised" Jesus from the dead. If He can raise Jesus from the dead He can raise you too from the dead. If Jesus raised himself from the dead, then he was not truly dead.

Peter's Opening

To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ -- 2 Peter 1:1 (ESV)

Depending on which bible translation you use, it seems like "our God" is the "Saviour Jesus Christ". However, it you compare it for example with:

to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ -- 2 Peter 1:1 (KJV)

Other translations like KJV render "God" separate from "our Saviour Jesus Christ". Peter more likely meant a separate "God" and another separate "Saviour Jesus Christ" as he did in his previous letter:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead... -- 1 Peter 1:3 (NKJV)
