The reasoning is that Jesus is God, therefore when you receive Jesus, you receive God, however this reasoning is flawed.

1. The first part of the same sentence is ignored: "Whoever receives you receives me" which, with this reasoning, should mean that you are also Jesus and God.
2. Jesus was not giving a science lesson. He was talking to his disciples and referred to their unity with his Father.
