Scriptures quoted by other authors

Matthew and Mark quoting Zechariah

Zechariah 13:7-9

And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written,

‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’”

-- Mark 14:27 (ESV); Matthew 26:31

Zechariah's prophecy:

“Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the LORD of hosts.

“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
I will turn my hand against the little ones.
In the whole land, declares the LORD, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive.
And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested.

They will call upon My name, and I will answer them.

I will say, ‘They are My people’; and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”

-- Zechariah 13:7-9 (ESV)

John quoting Zechariah

Zechariah 9:9

The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”

And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!”

His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. John 12:12-16

Zechariah's prophecy:

The burden of the word of the LORD...

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

-- Zechariah 9:1,9 (ESV)
