Hosea

The book Hosea was written by the prophet Hosea. This book is also known as Osee in the KJV.

Scriptures quoted by other authors

At least Jeremiah, Matthew and Paul considered Hosea a reputable prophet.

Jeremiah quoting Hosea

And in that day, declares the LORD, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground.

And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety.

And

I will betroth you to Me forever.
I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy.
I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.

And you shall know the LORD.

-- Hosea 2:16-20 (ESV)

which was quoted and referenced by Jeremiah:

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD:

I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying,

‘Know the LORD’,

for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

-- Jeremiah 31:33-34 (ESV)

Matthew quoting Hosea

And he (Joseph) rose and took the child (Jesus) and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet,

“Out of Egypt I called My son.”

-- Matthew 2:14-15 (ESV)

However, Hosea did not prophecy about Jesus. Instead, he referred to Israel:

When Israel was a child, I loved him,
And out of Egypt I called My son.
As they called them, so they went from them;
They sacrificed to the Baals, and burned incense to carved images.

-- Hosea 11:1 (ESV)

It does not make sense that Jesus would "sacrifice to the Baals" or "burn incense to carved images".

Some argue:

  • that Matthew tried to communicate is that Jesus had a similar experience like the Israelites that had to come out of Egypt after God dealt with the king
  • that Jesus was considered part of Israel as a descendant of them

Matthew 9:13, 12:7 also quotes Hosea 6:6.

Romans quoting Hosea

I will sow her for Myself in the land.
And I will have mercy on "No Mercy", and I will say to "Not My People", "You are My people"; and he shall say, "You are my God".

-- Hosea 2:23 (ESV)

which was quoted by Romans 9:25.

Hosea 1:10 was quoted by Romans 9:26.
