Scriptures quoted by other authors

Matthew quoting Isaiah's prophecy

Isaiah 7:14-16

Matthew's quote:

When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

-- Matthew 1:18-25 (ESV)

Isaiah's prophecy:

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted.

-- Isaiah 7:14-16 (ESV)

The original prophecy was for another boy called "Immanuel", however according to Matthew, this prophecy was fulfilled a second time when Jesus was born.

Joseph was concerned about the miraculous pregnancy of Mary and the angel provided a prophecy Joseph knew to comfort him.

Isaiah 42:1-4

Matthew's quote:

But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew from there. And great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all. Yet he warned them not to make him known, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

“Behold! My servant whom I have chosen,
My beloved in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon him,
And he will declare justice to the gentiles.
He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
And smoking flax he will not quench,
Till he sends forth justice to victory;
And in his name Gentiles will trust.”

-- Matthew 12:15-21 (NKJV)

Isaiah's prophecy:

“Behold! My servant whom I uphold,
My elect one in whom My soul delights!
I have put My Spirit upon him;
He will bring forth justice to the gentiles.
He will not cry out, nor raise his voice,
Nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
A bruised reed he will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

-- Isaiah 42:1-4 (NKJV)

Luke quoting Isaiah

Isaiah 53:12

Jesus' quote:

For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me (Jesus):

"And he was numbered with the transgressors."

For what is written about me has its fulfillment.”

-- Luke 22:37 (ESV)

Isaiah's prophecy:

Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, (Revelation 1:5-6)
because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

-- Isaiah 53:12 (ESV)

Isaiah 61:1-2

And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And uas was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.

-- Luke 4:14-22

Isaiah's prophecy:

The Spirit of the LORD God is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; -- Isaiah 61:1-2 (ESV)

John quoting Isaiah

Isaiah 54:13

Jesus' quote:

It is written in the Prophets,

"And they will all be taught by God."

Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me (Jesus) — not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.

-- John 6:45-46 (ESV)

Isaiah's prophecy:

All your children shall be taught by the LORD,
and great shall be the peace of your children. -- Isaiah 54:13 (ESV)

Disputes

Isaiah 9:6-7

The correct translation is debatable:

For a child will be born to us, [Lit. “has been born.” The verse is written in past tense]
a son will be given to us,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will call his name
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty Hero, [Or, “Mighty God,” or, “God is mighty”] Father of the Coming Age, [Or, “Everlasting Father,” or, “the Father is Everlasting”] Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

-- Isaiah 9:6-7 (REV)
