Jesus set our standards
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. -- John 13:15 (NIV)
and
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow in his steps. -- 1 Peter 2:21 (NIV)
and
This is how we know that we are in union with him:
the one who says he remains in union with him (Jesus Christ) is obligated to walk just as he walked. -- 1 John 2:5-6 (REV)
A Jesus God would set unfair standards for a limited mankind. Nobody ever said which should try to be more Christ-like. Instead, the words "you should" or "obligated" is used.
Paul wrote:
For those whom He (God) foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. -- Romans 8:29 (ESV)
The Jews understood that:
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. -- Luke 6:40 (ESV)
These were Jesus' words. Jesus would not have said this if he knew it would be impossible for his human disciples to be like him.
