The English noun "belief", "faith" or "faithfulness" translates to the Greek words πίστις, εως, ἡ (transliterated as "pistis") which means:

faith, belief, trust, confidence; fidelity, faithfulness -- Strong's Concordance

The English verb "believe" translates to the Greek word πιστεύω which means:

to believe, entrust -- Strong's Concordance

To whom or what do you entrust your life (soul)?

God clearly does not tolerate idols (Exodus 20:3-4).

Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy.

But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed.

Salvation is of the Lord.

-- Jonah 2:8-9

This was also commanded by the prophet Isaiah:

There's only one way that Israel's sin and guilt can be completely forgiven: They must crush the stones of every pagan altar and place of worship. -- Isaiah 27:9 (CEV)

Therefore, you need to choose if it is worth putting your trust in things that fail, like:

  • idols (Exodus 20:3-5, Ezekiel 18:6)
  • important people (Psalms 146:3)
  • wicked people (Psalm 1:1)
  • pleasure (Ecclesiastes 2:1-11, Proverbs 21:17)
  • money (Matthew 6:24)

Instead, you should put your trust (faith) in the LORD:

Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.

  • Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
  • Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
  • Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.

He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

-- Psalms 37:1-6 (ESV)

King David's son confirm this:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

-- Proverbs 3:5-8 (ESV)

Trusting the LORD

You have to trust (believe) the LORD for salvation.

There are no shortcuts

Faith alone will not save you.

You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe — and tremble!” -- James 2:19 (NKJV)

Whoever your ancestors or parents were or did won't save you.

Bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. -- Matthew 3:8

Reciting the "sinner's prayer" will not save you.

The Lord God is just

A "good God" is not a god who allow sin. The Lord God is just and will not bend his own rules.

Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’

Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

  • When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die.
  • Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’

O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

"Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways", declares the Lord GOD.

Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live. Ezekiel 18:29-32

-- Ezekiel 18:25-32 (ESV)

You must believe that Jesus is the Son of God

No one who denies the Son has the Father. -- 1 John 2:23 (ESV)

There is only one Saviour

Jesus said: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." -- John 14:6 (ESV)

This is also how the first believers in the New Testament understood it:

There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. -- 1 Timothy 2:5 (NKJV)

Jesus also warned:

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. -- Matthew 7:13-14 (NKJV)

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. -- Acts 4:12 (ESV)

Jesus is complete

You do not need to do additional things or obey special laws to get saved.

If righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain. -- Galatians 2:21 (NKJV)

Jesus's sacrificed is enough for all nations, including "black" people. You do not have to become a Jew (study Hebrew, adopt Jewish culture, go to Israel and so forth).

“Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!” -- Acts 28:28, Romans 11:11

There are no alternative "salvations"

Works cannot save:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast -- Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

Obedience cannot save:

No one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. We all fall short of the glory of God. -- Romans 3:23 (NIV)
